Diana came down the stairs at a trot and walked out the front door just as the grav vehicle lifted off. The two men were headed toward the ranch house but stopped as soon as they saw her. Craig nudged Leroy, and the two of them continued up the steps until they stood in front of her.

“The doctor says that Beatrice is going to be okay,” the older man said. “The damage to her leg is pretty extensive, but he was able to get everything back where it needed to be, and she’s in the regenerator. We’ll go back in the morning, and if everything is still good, she’ll come home to recuperate.”

The young man extended his hand to Diana. “Leroy Cavanaugh. I want to thank you and your friend for saving my sister and me. If the two of you hadn’t come into the woods in spite of the danger, we’d be dead, and that puts me in your debt.

“Craig says you have some questions about the mine. While that won’t clear what I owe you, I’ll be happy to tell you everything I know.”

“You owe that debt to Andrea, not me,” Diana said with a smile as she shook his hand. “You can tell her that yourself in a little while, but Rebecca is looking after her arm at the moment, so I’ll avail myself of your kind offer.”

“Whatever you need.”

Craig gestured toward the door. “Why don’t we go in and get more comfortable? It’s still too warm for a fire, but we can set up next to the fireplace.”

The three of them went into the ranch building and off to the side of the ground floor that Diana had never been in. That opened into a rather large area with a lot of comfortable seating and a ridiculously large fireplace.

As in large enough for her to lie inside it and not have the soles of her feet or the top of her head touch either side.

She stopped, turned to Craig, and raised an eyebrow. “Are you kidding me? What the hell do you need with a fireplace like that for? And what do you feed it? Whole trees?”

He smiled wryly and nodded. “It is big, I’ll grant you, but it was built by my ancestors as part of the original house. If you think it dominates this room, you should’ve seen what it looked like in that much smaller structure.

“As for fuel, it does eat trees. Thankfully, we can cut them into pieces first, so we don’t have to cart the entire trunk in at once. With the big cast-iron grate we’ve got inside it, we can use split pieces about a meter and a half long without any grief and still have plenty of space for cooking pots on top.”

“You cook on that? When you’ve got a fire going, it will incinerate everything.”

He shrugged slightly. “There is a particular skill that comes to cooking over a fire, I’ll admit, but it’s not impossible. You’ve just got to keep what you want far enough above the coals.
